History Rich Experiences in Albuquerque

Grass Roots is delighted to share insight and tips for exploring New Mexico’s largest city. Situated at the foot of the Sandia Mountains, cradled in the Rio Grande Valley, the surrounding landscapes are nothing short of spectacular. From American Indian and Southwestern history so apparent in adobe buildings and handcrafts to shops and outdoor activities, there’s something for every traveler.

Here are a few of our favorite things to do in Albuquerque:

  • Petroglyph National Monument – Stretching along the city’s western horizon, this natural monument is one of the biggest petroglyph sites in North America. More than 20,000 prehistoric carvings represent the Ancestral Pueblo peoples and early Spanish settlers who passed through the Rio Grande Valley anywhere from 400 to 700 years ago.
  • Albuquerque Museum of Art and History – Featuring the art of the American Southwest, three permanent exhibits display artifacts of colonial life in New Mexico. Remnants of conquistador armor, early weavings and maps preserve the rich history of Albuquerque. Located in the center of Old Town, the museum also includes a variety of exhibits dedicated to art from around the world.
  • Sandia Peak Tramway – Traveling from the northeast perimeter of Albuquerque to the crestline of the Sandia Mountains, the aerial tramway covers 2.7 miles and is the longest in the country. The views of the city, countryside, deep canyons, mountains and Cibola National Forest are breathtaking. From an observation deck atop Sandia Peak, there’s a gorgeous panoramic view of the Rio Grande Valley. We recommend taking some time to hike the mountain trails.
  • International Balloon Festival – Visit Albuquerque in October for a chance to see hundreds of colorful balloons take to the skies. Taking place over nine days, a rainbow of more than 500 hot air balloons soar across the skies over the city each morning. It’s the biggest balloon festival in the world.
  • San Felipe de Neri Church – One of the oldest remaining buildings in the city, this historic Catholic Church was built in 1793, during the Spanish colonial period. Located on the northside of Old Town Plaza, the San Felipe de Neri Church features a school, convent and rectory.
  • Old Town Albuquerque – Dating back to 1706, Old Town is a historic neighborhood founded by Spanish settlers. The majority of architecture is Pueblo-Spanish style adobe, but you’ll also find Victorian buildings here and there. Along with shops, boutiques, restaurants and galleries, take the time to visit The National Hispanic Cultural Center, The New Mexico Museum of Natural History and The American International Rattlesnake Museum.
